This Sonata movement is the most haunting I know by any composer and Mitsuko Uchida infuses it with the desperation yet the severity it requires. I have listened to this unbelievable artist twice at Carnegie Hall, the first time in April 2009 when she played among other works a Mozart Sonata and especially Schumann's daunting Fantasy Op 17, and the second time in October of that same year when she played Beethoven's last three sonatas with her customary intensity.
